Dr. C. Mark Chassay
C. Mark Chassay, MD, FAAFP, FASCM is co-founder of Texas Sports & Family Medicine, PLLC along with Mark Hutchens, M.D. and Robyn McCarty, M.D. He has practiced sports and family medicine since 1995. He was named Team Physician and Coordinator of Sports Medicine for Women's Athletics at the University of Texas at Austin in 1996.
In February 2005, Dr. Chassay was promoted to the new position of Head Team Physician for Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Texas at Austin, a position he continues to hold. In 2008, He was named the Medical Review Officer for the UIL Steroid Testing Program for the state of Texas. In addition he also served as Team Medical Physician for the Austin Wranglers Arena Football League team from its 2004 inaugural season until 2006.
Dr. Chassay is also involved in the United States Olympic Committee Volunteer Program. In September 2003, he completed the United States Olympic Committee Level I Volunteer Program at the Chula Visit (California) Training Center. In May 2005, he served as Chief Medical Officer for the United States at the VISA World Paralympic Cup in Manchester, England. Dr. Chassay served as a Medical Officer at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in July 2007 and for Team USA at the XXIX Summer Olympics held in Beijing, China in August 2008.
He graduated Valedictorian from Pasadena J. Frank Dobie High School in 1984. He later graduated with a bachelor of business administration/finance in 1988 from the University of Texas at Austin before starting medical school. Dr. Chassay earned his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1992. He subsequently completed a family practice residency at Memorial Hermann Hospital Southwest in Houston in 1995. After his residency, he moved to southern California and completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship at Kaiser Permanente (Fontana, CA) and the S.P.O.R.T. Clinic of Riverside in 1996. In 1999, he completed a Master of Education in Kinesiology/Sport Management at the University of Texas at Austin.
While in southern California, Dr. Chassay provided sports medicine coverage as team physician at Riverside Community College, California State University - San Bernardino and Arlington High School in the Riverside Unified School District. Additionally, he assisted in the first Major League Soccer combine in 1996.
A native Houstonian, Dr. Chassay, was a high school varsity athlete in football and baseball. He earned All-District 23-5A Defensive Back honors his senior year at J. Frank Dobie High School in 1983 having played for Texas Sports Hall of Famer William E. "Buster" Gilbreth. Dr. Chassay was also the Most Outstanding Offensive Player (Pro Division) at the Rudy Tomjanovich Basketball Camp in 1981.
Away from his practice, Dr. Chassay enjoys playing softball and basketball and enjoys running and walking around Lady Bird Lake. In addition, he lists traveling, watching sporting events, investing and genealogy as his other interests. He is the Travis County Medical Society President-Elect for 2009. Dr. Chassay is 43 years young and recently married to the former Kimberly Pierce.
